Elliston Cheer Squad Works It Out

October 13, 2005
Special to East Memphis Appeal

Elliston Baptist Academy had a private UCA Cheer Camp in their school gym.
The squad had to cancel its UT Martin cheer camp in the summer due to their coach -- me -- being in the hospital for the entire month of June.
I hated so much that the squad did not get to go back to the same cheer camp they had attended the summer before and bring home more awards, as they did in 2004.
UCA was gracious enough to send out the camp DVD material so we would not miss out on all the new dances and cheers for the 2005-06 school year.
UCA staff instructor Courtney Powell, also a member of the University of Memphis all-girl squad, taught the squad members the new dances and stunts. She was pleased with how well they could dance and saw the eagerness they had to learn. Mike Morphy of UCA Sales and Support came in after the lunch break and worked on the elite stunts.
The new squad members had a busy day with learning the new material and being fitted for their uniforms. We have increased the size of our squad with the increased enrollment and new students. We finally have the dedication that it will take to make this year a success in cheerleading. The eight new rookies bring to the squad the right attitude and hard work to be the best.
The squad performed at halftime for the University of Memphis-UT Chattanooga football game. They did a fantastic job at the game and about 90 Elliston fans were in attendance to show support and cheer for them.
We have a packed busy year ahead of us with our bowling teams and basketball team playing out of town, and we are looking at a spring competition. The main goal is to keep Red Raider spirit kickin' at EBA and let everyone know that we are still going strong.

2005-2006 Elliston varsity cheerleaders include rookie Jessica Applewhite, captain Heather Dycus, Kara Clerkin, Tasha Turman, Erika Harmon, rookies Destiny Johnson, Faith Martin, co-captain Shelby Robinson, Daniel Fine (mascot), rookies Jessica Ross, Brittania Vaughn, Amber Turner, April Brittenum and Jerrica Applewhite. Also in the picture are instructors Mike Morphy and Courtney Powell.
